AOK Schleswig-Holstein, Statutory Health Insurance, Germany

The AOK is one of the largest health insurance providers in Germany, with a market share of approximately 37%. The AOK in Schleswig-Holstein has more than 800,000 insured individuals and 2,150 employers.

Increasing competition in the health insurance market in Germany in recent years means that there will be big changes in the future for health insurers, including the AOK. At present there are 230 health insurers in Germany. Those which do not adapt to meet the challenges of increasing competition will not survive. One way for insurers to diversify is by offering eHealth applications and treatments for insured persons, especially for chronically sick people.

The AOK and its partners initiate and support several innovative eHealth projects using modern telemedicine. In cooperation with the Telemedicine Center in Bad Segeberg (TSGZ) the AOK has introduced ischemia home monitoring to reduce the pre-hospital phase, and home care monitoring for CHF patients.

Additionally, the AOK was a partner in the finalised INTERREG III B project ‘eHealth for Regions’ and is now a member of the new eHealth for Regions network. Until 1 May 2008, the AOK Schleswig-Holstein was home to the Management Secretariat from the eHealth for Regions network.
