Region Skåne develops distributed medical multidisciplinary conferences
In the Region Skåne a new project for the implementation of virtual multidisciplinary conferences has now started. Two conference rooms will be established at the university hospitals in Malmö and Lund. Participants from other hospitals will be able to take part per distance via a multi-conference unit.
Medical multidisciplinary conferences are competence centres used to collect medical specialists like surgeons, oncologists, radiologists, physiologists and pathologists to decide on the treatment plan for a patient. Recent reorganisations in Region Skåne, including merging of the university hospitals in Malmö and Lund, establishing one organisation for all laboratories in Skåne, establishing of a regional cancer centre are all urging on development of technology for cooperation over distances.
A study to describe the way of working and needs for distance participation in a number of multidisciplinary conferences has been carried through and a report in Swedish language is available.
A new project with the aim to establish two conference rooms equipped for virtual multidisciplinary conferences in Lund and in Malmö has now started. Participants from other hospitals will be able to take part per distance via a multi-conference unit. Efforts will be made to establish a conference environment with a pronounced sense of presence, easy to use technology and where necessary images and other important material are shown on all locations.
The virtual conferences are planned to start May – June 2010 and fist conferences to be implemented are endocrine tumour conference, uro-oncological conference and colorectal cancer conference.
