Project title USB stick - personal medical information stick
Summary One part of the eHealth for Regions project was the development of a Personal Medical Information Stick for elderly travellers with chronic diseases. The USB stick contains patient information; contact details for persons who should be contacted in the case of an emergency; contact details of the patient’s general practitioner and clinical records. The person’s medical information, such as diagnosis of their condition, important consultation dates, their medication (trade name, generic name, doses, dose per day), allergies, vaccinations, implants and actual findings of investigation (HB A1c, Creatinin, Blood Pressure etc.) must be recorded by the general practitioner. After the family doctor has documented the relevant data on a special document which has been developed in the project, the personal patient information is translated into English by another practitioner and the document is saved on the USB stick.

This process guarantees consistency of translation and validity of medical data. Travellers now have the opportunity to carry their medical data with them and every practitioner can see and read the data on the computer. At the moment this is a very circumstantial data acquisition process and the future must be a web-based personal medical record. Partners from the eHealth for Regions network have now founded an IT company which will handle the automatic electronic data exchange between the office computer and the USB stick. The next steps are automatic translation of patient data and a web-based record. This will be realised in the new project from the eHealth for Regions network which will started in autumn 2008.
